In 1945 Fred Ertl Sr., was out of work due to a strike at the Dubuque, Iowa foundry where he was employed. To feed his family he utilized his mold making talents, learned as a teenager in Germany, to turn molten metal into toys for his sons and replacement castings for his friends. Before long he was selling toys to Dubuque area stores. Fred's factory was his basement. His production crew was his wife and five boys, including ten-year old Joe Ertl.
To commemorate Joe Ertl's farm toy legacy, Scale Models is manufacturing a limited run of tractors from his father's original patterns. Like the 1945 tractor, Joe's tractor is sand cast aluminum, uses a bolt for the rear axle and a nail for the front axle. The original tractors were hand dipped in red, green and orange. To distinguish this tractor from the original, the Legacy tractor is powder coated paint with back wheels and is engraved JOSEPH L. ERTL 1945-2005 in the frame.
